Two hours out, the coast is gone and the water has turned the colour of a swimming pool. Then a strip of white sand and a pink lighthouse lift off the horizon — and the whole boat goes quiet.
You board a 75-ft sailing catamaran at Jan Thiel Beach at 8:00 or 8:30 AM. Breakfast sandwiches come round on the way out. The crossing takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours across open Caribbean — sometimes glassy, sometimes bumpy, always part of the story. At Klein Curaçao the catamaran anchors just off the beach. A dinghy carries your bag ashore once; you swim in through water so clear you can count the ripples on the sand.
From there the day is yours: snorkel the turtle grounds, walk to the abandoned pink lighthouse and the rusting wreck on the wild north shore, or claim a palapa and do nothing at all. Around 12:30 PM the crew fires up the grill on board — ribs, chicken, steak, salads, bread — and the premium bar opens: beer, wine, cocktails, whatever you’re drinking. Mid-afternoon the sails go up if the wind agrees, and you sail home with the sun behind you, back at Jan Thiel around 5:30 PM.
This is the day we recommend for couples, families with kids 6+, friend groups and anyone with “Klein Curaçao” on their list — which, if you’re in Curaçao, should be everyone. It is not a tour for cruise passengers (the schedule doesn’t fit a port call) or for anyone who can’t swim in open water. Honest note: the island has no shops, no toilets on land and no shade beyond a few shared palapas — the marine toilets on board are your bathroom. That is exactly why it still looks like this.
