About This Tour

Tarpon are everywhere in San Juan's lagoon system, rolling at dawn off the mangrove edges of Laguna San José, busting bait in the channels of Laguna Torrecilla, holding under bridge pilings at the city's eastern edge. They run 50 to 150 pounds in these waters, and they fight like nothing else on light tackle.

The boat is a 22ft Pathfinder rigged for sight-fishing the flats. Light spinning gear, with fly setups available, and the captain works the tide and the light to put you on rolling fish. Most days are catch-and-release under local conservation practice, so the photo and the fight is the trophy. Beyond tarpon there is snook on the mangrove edges, snapper around structure, and jacks busting bait in the channels.

Up to 4 anglers per charter, 4 hours, departing Cangrejos Yacht Club in Carolina, 15 minutes east of San Juan Bay Marina. Polarized sunglasses are essential, since they let you spot fish before you cast. The captain instructs first-time casters, so no experience is needed.
